Illegal mining has become an issue of concern to most Ghanaians especially the destructive effects it has on the environment.  River bodies get polluted, forest reserves are destroyed in huge proportions, pit collapsing and killing miners and the negative effects goes on and on. Stonebwoy has taken note of the above challenges and has used his music to address it.

Many were taking by surprise when on 3rd November, 2021, Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Livingstone Etse Satekla known on stage as Stonebwoy released a single title, “Greedy men”. Typical of the award winning artiste, lyrics as usual were clean but the depth of the song and the creativity to address all the various dangers of illegal mining was worth paying attention to.

The single in summary called on individuals engaged in illegal mining popularly known as “galamsey” to put a stop to it. The song talks about how a few greedy men are selling and destroying generational wealth whiles the majority are suffering.

Stonebwoy touching on the inspiration behind the song, noted that the environment gives life, but illegal mining is destroying the future. He continued that very soon it will become difficult to find clean water to drink if things do not change. He noted that he had to engage in a deep thought process to be able to create a song that speaks to power whiles encourage everyone to be considerate in protecting our environment.

The multiple award winning dancehall act called on state institutions in charge of the environment to capitalize on the huge buzz the song has generated in 24 hours after its release to educate persons in mining areas on the dangers and disadvantages if they should continue illegal/unregulated mining.

Speaking during a television interview, Stonebwoy, also admonished colleague musicians to also take up advocacy roles to better society. He also called on government to consider making funds available to support such initiatives that will go a long way to benefit the country.

The Bhim President has however assured fans that this year’s “Bhim Concert” will come off calling on them to be on the look out for the venue and date.
