Davido released “FEM” the lead single off his “A Better Time” 2020 album with the usual expectation of topping music chats across the world. Little did he know this was nearly going to land him in trouble with a government official.
This was because the song was very instrumental during the “EndSars protest” in 2020 Davido noted. Although the song was dropped two weeks before the protest FEM was used to send message to those in power. FEM which means shut up, was played by a random person interrupting a government officially who was addressing protestors at a rally.
“They played the song, everybody’s singing. He’s trying to talk, but everybody is singing the song instead. Then somebody got the video and it just went crazy. From there, it became the anthem of the whole– I almost got in trouble. I was like, ‘Yo, I did record that song, but’ It was nice to see them use a song of mine to be instrumental in how they felt.”
Davido disclosed this during an interview with L’officiel, a French fashion magazine, adding that “The record’s already gone, it was huge already. Then there was a little rally where this government official was speaking to the people and then somebody played the song”.
Davido whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke released his third studio album A Better Time, on Friday 13 November 2020.
